Windhoek to host IAIS accounting forum

The Namibia Financial Institutions Supervisory Authority (NAMFISA) has announced that it will host the meeting of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) Accounting and Auditing Working Group (AAWG) in Windhoek, Namibia, on 16 and 17 September 2026.

The IAIS is the global standard-setting body responsible for developing principles, standards and guidance for the supervision of the insurance sector. Its membership comprises insurance supervisors from more than 200 jurisdictions worldwide, covering approximately 97% of global insurance premiums.

The AAWG serves as the IAIS's specialist forum on insurance accounting, auditing, valuation, financial reporting and disclosure matters. The working group supports the development of internationally recognised supervisory principles, standards and guidance relating to the accounting and auditing of insurers, valuation for solvency purposes, supervisory reporting, audit assurance and public disclosures.

In addition, the AAWG maintains the IAIS's engagement with international accounting and auditing standard-setting bodies and monitors emerging developments in financial reporting, valuation methodologies, auditing standards and insurer disclosures.

Through this work, the working group helps ensure that insurance supervisors remain informed of evolving global practices and emerging issues affecting the insurance sector.

Hosting the AAWG meeting in Namibia reflects the growing role of African supervisors in shaping global insurance supervisory discussions and provides an important opportunity for engagement on emerging international developments affecting the insurance sector.

Commenting on the upcoming meeting, NAMFISA CEO Kenneth Matomola said: "Strong accounting, auditing and disclosure standards are fundamental to a resilient and trustworthy insurance sector. By hosting the IAIS Accounting and Auditing Working Group, Namibia is helping to advance dialogue on the future of insurance supervision while strengthening relationships that support policyholder protection and financial stability globally."

NAMFISA is an active participant in the work of the AAWG and is represented on the working group by Louis Potgieter, a senior financial analyst within NAMFISA's Insurance and Medical Aid Funds Division.

The authority said it looks forward to welcoming international delegates to Windhoek and facilitating constructive discussions that will contribute to the continued strengthening of insurance supervision and financial reporting practices globally.
