NUST launches Logistics PhD

The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) has launched the country’s first Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Supply Chain Management. The move marks a significant step forward in strengthening Namibia’s capacity in a sector critical to national economic growth.

Set to commence in May 2026, the newly accredited programme is designed to equip candidates with advanced knowledge, contemporary tools, and strong methodological skills. These are intended to address complex challenges across key areas, including logistics, transport, procurement, warehousing, and distribution.

As Namibia continues to position itself as a regional logistics hub, the programme is expected to play a critical role in developing the expertise needed to support a more efficient, resilient, and competitive transport and logistics sector.

“The PhD in Supply Chain Management responds to national and industry needs. The fifth National Development Plan (NDP 5) and the Namibia Logistics Hub Master Plan highlighted the shortage of higher-level skills in logistics and supply chain management; this programme seeks to fill that gap,” said senior transport and logistics lecturer, Professor Smart Dumba.

He said the programme takes a forward-looking and globally relevant approach to supply chain challenges, opening a vast array of opportunities for professionals in the sector. Namibia envisions becoming a logistics hub for Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries. To achieve this, Prof Dumba said more studies are needed on Namibia’s corridor development, regional trade integration, port competitiveness, maritime logistics, digital logistics, smart corridors, and sustainable green logistics.

Interested candidates with strong academic and professional backgrounds in logistics, supply chain management, or related disciplines are encouraged to apply. The programme is particularly suited to those keen to contribute to research, policy development, and operational excellence within the sector.

Applicants must hold a recognised master's degree at NQF Level 9 or equivalent in a relevant field and submit a draft research concept note. Additional requirements include participation in a pre-selection interview and, for industry applicants, proof of at least two years of relevant work experience.
