Vivo Energy Namibia, the exclusive marketer and distributor of Shell-branded petroleum products in the country, officially opened its new Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Filling Plant in Tsumeb. The launch marks a significant milestone in Vivo Energy Namibia’s strategic expansion into diversified energy solutions for the Namibian market, following the 2023 acquisition of the GasIt business.

The opening of the plant also coincided with the soft launch of the ShellGas brand in Namibia - a milestone in Vivo Energy’s commitment to expanding its LPG offering under the trusted Shell brand, and reaffirming the company’s intent to make cleaner, safer and more accessible energy available to more Namibians.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Vivo Energy Namibia managing director, Jaco van Rensburg, expressed appreciation to the Tsumeb municipality for creating an enabling environment for investment and business growth.

“We are grateful to the Tsumeb municipality for their support and partnership,” he said. “I would also like to extend sincere thanks to our contractors and the Vivo Energy Engineering teams for their dedication and professionalism in delivering this project.”

Construction of the plant began in 2024 and reflects Vivo Energy Namibia’s commitment to operational excellence and timely delivery.

Hans Paulsen, executive vice president, East at Vivo Energy Group, emphasised the company’s broader strategy to grow its LPG business across Africa. “We recognise the critical role that LPG plays in Africa’s energy transition. It is a cleaner and safer alternative to traditional fuels such as wood, charcoal, and paraffin, contributing significantly to the reduction of CO2 emissions while improving access to energy for both households and businesses,” said Paulsen.

The new facility boasts a 114m³ LPG storage tank, a semi-automatic LPG cylinder filling facility, and a bulk truck loading and offloading gantry. It is expected to serve as a key supply

hub for the northern regions of Namibia through a robust distribution network.
