Supplier database expands energy reach
Namibia’s offshore oil discoveries and growing renewable energy industry are creating new opportunities for local companies, but greater integration into the energy value chain will depend on how effectively businesses can connect with international project developers and contractors.
Isabel von Oelhafen, business development manager at NamibiaOilAndGas.com, said greater visibility of local capabilities would be important as major energy projects move towards development.
Namibia has a range of companies with technical expertise, skilled workers and specialised services that could support large industrial projects. However, identifying suitable local suppliers can be difficult for international operators, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors and other suppliers entering the market.
NamibiaOilAndGas.com established its supplier database about four years ago to address this gap. The platform has since been expanded and now includes more than 500 local suppliers and professionals, according to the company.
The database covers areas including engineering and technical services, logistics and transport, construction and infrastructure, and health, safety and environmental services.
For international companies, access to information on local suppliers can help identify potential partners for procurement, joint ventures, subcontracting and longer-term service agreements.
The platform also provides local small and medium-sized enterprises with a way to present their certifications, track records, geographical reach and specialised services to potential clients before formal procurement processes begin.
Von Oelhafen said stronger links between international developers and local businesses would be important to ensuring that investment in Namibia’s energy sector translates into wider economic participation.
“Local content” is increasingly becoming an important consideration as Namibia develops its oil, gas and renewable energy industries, with local businesses seeking greater participation in emerging supply chains.
A stronger domestic supply chain could also improve project resilience and reduce operating costs by increasing access to goods and services within Namibia.
