From classroom to boardroom

Tulela Kosma Shikongo, a Mathematics and Statistics graduate from the University of Namibia has embarked on an exciting journey as a Trainee Investment Analyst at Sisedi Investment Group. With a passion for numbers and a commitment to empowering women in finance, Tulela’s days are filled with learning, research and collaboration.

After joining Sisedi in February 2024, her role as a Trainee Investment Analyst has been an insightful one.

“I was actively looking for opportunities, so I approached Sisedi to see if they had anything to offer. What mattered most to me was getting my foot in the door. Luckily, I was just in time because they had an internship program. The rest is history,” she says.

Her duties include assessing investment philosophies, conducting weekly research analyses, supporting the preparation of tender documents and preparing reports for stakeholders. “It is a privilege to learn from experienced professionals and grow in a place that values both analytical thinking and making meaningful investment decisions. I want to be part of Sisedi’s return on investment in being empowered, empowering other women and contributing to their mission.”

However, no industry comes with zero challenges and Tulela has learned to manage multiple tasks while also learning on the job. "The finance industry is fast-paced and constantly evolving," Tulela said.

"It requires a deep understanding of complex financial concepts and keeping up with market trends, which can be overwhelming." To keep abreast of the latest trends in the investment industry, Tulela leverages technology. "I download financial news apps, follow industry experts on social media and listen to investment podcasts," she explains. "Reading local newspapers also helps me stay informed about regional developments."

Looking ahead, Tulela envisions herself as a seasoned investment professional in five years. "I aim to have acquired both the hard skills, like financial analysis and portfolio management, and the soft skills, like effective communication and leadership," she shares. "This internship is a crucial step in achieving these goals."

For those considering an internship at Sisedi or in the investment industry, Tulela advises, "If you are interested in the industry, start reading up now and build your knowledge on investments, even at a very high level. Don’t be scared to learn; be open to criticism and grow from it."

Tulela is particularly excited about the future of Sisedi Investment Group. "I can’t wait to see us managing N$ 20 billion in assets," she exclaims. "I’m thrilled to be part of this journey and to witness our plans and strategies come to life."
