Botswana, Namibia roaming rate reduction takes effect
The ministry of information has announced that Namibia and Botswana have both agreed to roaming costs which became effective last month.
The new rates are expected to boost cross-border communication, the ministry said.
The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) and the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BORCA) directed the respective mobile network operators in both countries, namely Telecom Namibia, MTC, Botswana Telecommunications Corporation, Mascon Wireless Botswana and Orange Botswana to slash roaming rates.
"This bold step forward in reducing roaming costs marks a new chapter in the digital transformation efforts of both Namibia and Botswana. By making communication more affordable, the two countries are not only strengthening bilateral relations but also fostering greater economic opportunities, especially for businesses and travelers," the ministry said.
Calls to Botswana will be reduced by 75% between Orange Botswana and MTC while calls from Botswana between BTC and TN Mobile will enjoy a 80% reduction.
