Capricorn Group’s ChangeMakers bring warmth to family of hope services
On the day before the longest night of the year, which is the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere on June 21, 2025, twenty dedicated volunteers from Capricorn Group, known as
the ChangeMakers, gathered at the Family of Hope Services in Havanna, Windhoek to spread warmth, joy, and compassion. As part of their “Winter Warmers” initiative, these Capricorn
employees spent the day serving steaming cups of homemade soup to the children and staff at this vital community hub. This effort embodies the Capricorn Group's commitment to social impact and corporate responsibility.
Arriving mid-morning, the ChangeMakers served more than just a comforting meal; they also offered friendship, laughter, and connection. The sight of volunteers kneeling to talk, playfully
engaging the children and gently asking, “How are you?” showed how simple actions can mean a lot to a child. The atmosphere was warm in more ways than one. Volunteers ChangeMakers
sat with the little ones, sharing stories and colouring in pictures while encouraging the kids to dream big. They turned a cold winter's day into a moment of joy and belonging. The sound of laughter from the games filled the air, with voices calling out the famous "Goal"; while playing a football game.
This act of service is part of Capricorn Group’s broader culture of employee volunteerism, which empowers staff to live out the values of being Connectors of Positive Change. Previously,
ChangeMakers painted community centres, donated warm clothing, and brightened days for children in early development centres. This time, the focus was on showing up, with soup in
hand and hearts open, to be present when it mattered most.
The Winter Warmers initiative ties directly to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that Capricorn Group has prioritised. It reflects SDG 2, Zero Hunger, by ensuring
that children in vulnerable settings receive a hot, nutritious meal. It contributes to SDG 3, Good Health and Well-being, by offering wholesome food during a time of year when health risks
increase. It also brings SDG 8, Decent Work and Economic Growth, to life through meaningful employee engagement that extends purpose beyond the office. Finally, SDG 17, Partnerships for
the Goals, comes to life through Capricorn’s hands-on collaboration with Family of Hope Services, a trusted community partner that makes a lasting difference in children’s lives.
“These moments matter,” said one volunteer during the evening’s reflections. “It’s not just about soup, it’s about letting these kids know someone cares.”

For the ChangeMakers, spending time at this safe haven didn’t just leave a mark on the children, but it also made an impression on their hearts. Several employees walked away with a renewed sense of purpose and a desire to stay involved in efforts that uplift children through time, attention and kindness.
Capricorn Group’s Marlize Horn, Group Executive:Chief Brand and Corporate Affairs Officer, emphasised that acts of service like these are more than one-day events. “When our people give
of themselves in this way, through time, kindness and heart, it reminds us what community means. These small moments have big echoes.” Turning one moment of warmth into one of connection, the Capricorn ChangeMakers showed that real change begins with a simple act of care and a clear message that even a cup of soup can carry the weight of hope.
