Nedbank Namibia empowers NDF commanders

Nedbank Namibia, in partnership with Women’s Action for Development (WAD), hosted a financial literacy workshop in Keetmanshoop for commanders and senior officers of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF).

The session was designed to equip participants with essential financial management skills, enhance their financial resilience, and support informed decision-making. The workshop covered practical topics such as budgeting, saving for emergencies, responsible borrowing, investment planning, and debt consolidation. Participants also learned about the

importance of credit awareness, loan consolidation, and long-term financial planning.

A total of 20 NDF commanders and senior officers from various units stationed in the southern region attended the workshop. Nedbank Namibia head of marketing and communications, Gernot de Klerk, said the initiative demonstrates the bank’s commitment to empowering those who serve the nation by sharing knowledge that carries lasting value.

"When we equip Namibians in key sectors such as the Namibian Defence Force with practical financial skills, we support individual stability and strengthen the country’s economic foundation.

Financial literacy helps people plan, save and invest wisely. It reflects Nedbank’s belief that financial knowledge opens real opportunities for people to live confidently and make responsible choices that benefit their families and communities," De Klerk said.

This initiative is part of Nedbank’s long-standing collaboration with WAD, which began in 2017. The partnership has delivered numerous workshops on gender-based violence (GBV), gender-related laws, and human rights, while integrating financial education as a vital element of community empowerment.

Sylvia Stein, a personal banker at the Nedbank Keetmanshoop Branch, described financial education as a cornerstone of empowerment. "When individuals understand how to manage their money, they gain confidence, independence, and the ability to make choices that improve their quality of life," Stein said.

Ndakumwa Inkono, Nedloans sales consultant at the Nedbank Namibia Keetmanshoop Branch, added that such sessions go beyond banking as they create a foundation for sustainable growth.

"By sharing our knowledge, we are not just teaching people about money – we are helping them build better futures," Inkono said.

Nedbank and WAD plan to expand the initiative to reach junior officers and new recruits within the NDF. The goal is to ensure that financial education becomes an integral part of personal and

professional development across Namibia’s defence institutions, empowering service members to manage their finances responsibly and plan for long-term stability.
